Submitted by Shawn Robinson, C'21, Communications and Marketing Committee

Award-winning, non-binary writer, author, and activist, George M. Johnson, C’07 released their second memoir, “We Are Not Broken.”

“We are not Broken” is a story about black boy joy and how society tries to break them. It is also a story about Johnson’s grandmother whom they attribute the inspiration for both their memoirs.

“I write for people who don’t feel seen,” said George M. Johnson.

Johnson’s debut memoir “All Boys Aren’t Blue” was reviewed by the New York Times as “an exuberant unapologetic memoir infused with a deep but clear-eyed love for its subjects” and set the trajectory for the second memoir, “We are not Broken.”

At Virginia Union University, Johnson majored in Finance and went on to earn a master’s degree from Bowie State University in human development.  Johnson is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.

Raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, Johnson now lives in New York City where they have written for over 60 national media publications.
